About FSC Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a stakeholder - owned system designed to promote responsible global forest management. It provides standard-setting, trademark assurance, accreditation services and market access for companies and organizations interested in responsible forests. As of January 2006, the FSC has recognized 15 certification bodies, and certified enterprises have the right to use the FSC logo.

Background

The global problem of forests is becoming more and more serious: forest area decreases and forest degradation increases. Forest resources are declining in quantity (area) and quality (ecosystem diversity), and some consumers in Europe and the United States refuse to buy wood products without legal certification.

Establishment

At the 1990 U.S. California conference, some representatives of consumers, timber trade organizations, environmental and human rights organizations felt the need to create an honest and credible system to identify well-managed forests as acceptable sources of forest products. The meeting concluded that the system should include the definition of good forest management by global public opinion, the independent review of forest management and a global umbrella organization. The name of the fsc-forest Stewardship Council came into being.

In October 1993, 130 delegates from 26 countries established the FSC board of governors in Toronto, Canada, and elected the board of directors.
